This movie is based upon a Korean children’s memoir (“Kang Aji Ttong”) written by Jung-Saeng Kwon, which won Korea’s 1968 Children’s Literature Award. Thankfully, this is *not* yet another example of bawdy, tasteless, gratuitous scatalogical humor (unlike a distinct well-known “Christmas Poo”) . Parents may net an opportunity to vow their children lessons about the purpose and meaning of life and environmental issues. Or if you’re like me, you’ll relish giggling with your kids at the novelty of a claymation movie that features the adventures of a LUMP OF POO! (*snort*) Kids luxuriate in scatalogical humor (at least mine do), and I don’t mind them having it in shrimp doses if it’s fortified with some great thematic negate…

This is a improbable anecdote that my child and I loved watching together. It is a tender and lively account that we have watched over and over again. At first the title made me a slight skeptical to say the least, but after hearing the first piece of the music introduction I knew this would be a accepted for years to near.

This amazing two-disc space of the Oscar-winning “Best Boy” and its sequel, “Best Man”, is already out in stores so I’m not certain why amazon has a slow May release date. (I’ve seen copies at both Borders and Tower) . In any case, in a world of mammoth documentaries, few can top this noteworthy memoir of mentally challenged Philly Wohl, the director’s cousin, as his aging parents try to salvage him on his feet before their deaths. If you can come by through many of these scenes without crying — Philly at his unusual day center watching a novel girl friend dance with someone else as confusion falls over his face, Philly singing “If I Were a Rich Man” backstage with Zero Mostel, and, especially, Philly digesting news of his father’s death — then your heart is far more hardened than mine. This film (and its less known sequel, which catches up with Philly 20 years later) does what Hollywood can not with pathetic star vehicles like “Forrest Gump” and “Rainman”: earn you change the plot you spy at mentally challenged people and the ones who care for them forever. And, lest you contemplate this sounds like a total downer, you’ll be amazed how mighty you smile and topple in like with these people, as well. Don’t miss this one and thank God for companies that Docurama that score these spacious long-out-of-print films aid out there.

As a worker in the field of MRDD (mental retardation and developmental diabilities), I am always involved to ogle movies or documentaries about the people we encourage. I was surprised to recognize this well-made film about such “right” people. No “abominable retarded guy” schmooz, no extremely horrendous happenings, honest a myth about a man’s life. Philly is a enormous guy with an pretty, infectuous lust for life who had me laughing out loud! Yes, I was singing along to “If I were a Rich Man”! His down-to-earth, advantageous, at times paralyzed parents and sister exasperated me almost sob, because too often in our world of MRDD, our clients are alone, without family. Attractive! Loving! Dependable!

Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS was very successful with both critics and audiences when it debuted in 1927 Berlin–but it was thereafter edited for distribution by Channing Pollock, who disliked it and removed colossal chunks of the film and substantially altered the storyline. The resulting film was admired for its visual style, but it proved a primary and box office disappointment. Neglected in the wake of sound, surviving prints of the film were left to corrode and decay–and when it began to near the home market via VHS and DVD the results were very hit or miss; Blackhawk released a fairly credible version of the truncated film to home video, but for the most piece the quality of these releases varied from barely mediocre to downright unwatchable.

Until now.

A broad chunk of METROPOLIS–perhaps as great a quarter of more–has been forever lost, but this Kino Video DVD release offers the single best version of the film available. The previously nick footage that tranquil exists has been restored; gaps in the film have been bridged by the occasional expend of stills and explanatory title cards; the film itself has been painstakingly and digitally restored; and the soundtrack is the Gottfried Huppertz current created for the film’s 1927 Berlin debut. In seeing this version of METROPOLIS, I was struck by how very differently it reads from the previously available truncated version. The visual style and the chronicle itself are great more bright and cohesive, and in the wake of this restoration it becomes impossible to lisp the film space as landmark of international cinema.

Freder Fredersen (Gustav Frohlich) is the son of Joh Fredersen (Alfred Able), who reigns over the tall city of Metropolis. Freder is surprised to stare his lifestyle has been built on the unseen but backbreaking labor of an entire class of unseen workers who tend the machines that create the city run–and he descends to the subterranean levels of Metropolis in an worry to understand their lives… and, not incidentally, to get the mysterious but pretty woman Maria (Brigitta Helm) who has inspired his interest in the workers’ pickle. But his father is concerned by both Freder’s interest and Maria’s activities among the workers, and he turns to scientist C.A. Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) for assist. Rotwang has created a robot, and he agrees to give it the likeness of Maria in order to undermine both Freder’s adore for the girl and her acquire activities. But Rotwang has a hidden agenda of his own: once the robot has been unleashed, he will exercise her to waste Metropolis and thereby true revenge on Joh Fredersen for past transgressions against him.

In many respects the memoir is simplistic, but the film’s visual style and connotations are anything but. Deeply influenced by such art movements as Expressionism, Objectivism, Art Deco, and Bauhaus, the film is visually fascinating–not only in its scenic designs, but in director Lang’s famed skill at creating the much crowd scenes that dominate the film and building the inch and tension of the film as it moves toward an intense climax. But while one can–and many do–admire the film purely at this level, there is quite a lot going on in terms of philosophical impart as well: while it offers few viable solutions, the film raises such issues as the relationship between capital and labor, the location of religion in current society, human reaction to overwhelming technology, and (perhaps most interestingly) the drift of government into a class-conscious corporate entity. And religious motifs abound in the film: a largely deserted cathedral; Moloch; the Tower of Babel; and crosses–intriguingly juxtaposed with a repeating motif of the pentagram-like designs associated with the robot. It is spirited stuff.

There has been complaint that this restoration runs at wrong run and the performances are therefore unnecessarily jerky. I did not glean this to be the case. In determined instances the movement is deliberately jerky and mechanical–the workers are a case in point–but beyond this there is nothing for which the contrast between still acting and current acting techniques cannot record. There has also been some complaint that the title cards should have been left in their new German and translated via subtitle. There is a definite validity to this, but it seems a minor quibble; title cards were typically translated in the peaceful era itself. The DVD includes a number of extras, including mild photographs, biographies of the major figures keen in the film, and two though-provoking documentaries-one on the restoration process and one on the creation of the film itself. Both are interesting; the audio commentary track by film historian Enno Patalas, however, is mildly disappointing. But when all is said and done, it is the film that counts. And this restoration is a mighty achievement, to say the least, a project which brings a immense landmark of world cinema encourage from the edge of the abyss. Indispensible; a must-own.

–GFT (Amazon Reviewer) –

This is the 139 little, tinted version, with the disjointed music, distributed by “JEF films” and labeled “Aikman Archive” in yellow on the box. The sound is abominable and the video quality is dreadful. For pleasant video quality, glean the version produced by Kino Video instead. although the Kino version has a abominable sound track, at least the video quality is very estimable. For obedient sound, bag the Moroder version of Metropolis.

This review assumes that you have already seen Metropolis. For those strange with Metropolis, it is considered “the” first SciFi movie — the robot, the chilly visual effects of future cities, and a few excited scientist lab scenes. But it is only a immense movie IF you gawk the proper version. Sadly, there are more then 6 versions of the film floating around —

Black/white, poor music, boring playback

B/W, poor music, snappily playback

tinted, awful music, plain playback

tinted, obliging music, hastily playback

plus a few versions with abominable video quality (the DVD version is such a case) and other versions with missing scenes, a non-logical trudge to the myth line due to terrible editing, etc.

Unfortunately, the status with prints of Metropolis is a bit of a mess. Those looking for the tinted Girogio Moroder sound track should NOT acquire this tape.

Although the urge time of this version of the movie is 139 minutes, it is actually missing scenes that are in the 90 slight Kino Video and Moroder versions of the tape. The reason is that this 139 miniature tape is hasten at a SLOWER run than the Kino tape is. Also, the music is totally out of sync and unrelated to the action.

Unfortunately, Moroder’s copy is not available from anywhere. At $24.95, I’d hoped that the folks at Amazon.com had found a copy but this is not the case. Someone should derive a first-rate copy of the Moroder tape, sell that, and burn all of the other versions. Although some people object to Moroder’s rock soundtrack, at least it follows the yarn line and is an helpful sound track on its enjoy.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Moroder’s copy the first time I saw Metropolis and I am very ecstatic that I did.

To add further insult to injury, the CD of Moroder’s soundtrack is not the same as the music that appearred in the movie. The CD has some additional songs and is missing some others. So you can’t redub a video from the CD. So don’t rep the “Moroder CD” and interrogate to remix your beget copy of the video.

OK, having provided all of the background info, there is the review:

139-minute B&W version published by JEF films. The conceal says it is a “newly restored version”, but image quality is so abominable that I would rather call it “newly destroyed version”. It has actually more missing scenes than both Kino’s and Moroder’s versions, but runs longer because of slower frame accelerate.

Irregardless to the reproduction of the analog-to-digital technology, Charles Schulz and family have produced one of the best written cartoons in the lifespan of America. I can count on my one hand the names of cartoonists whose work is embedded in my video/dvd/tape collection.

My only gripe is not of the Schulz’s library, but of the reproduction team who dispenses redigitized episodes on dvd with only two or three 24 exiguous shows on a disc! AND the fee for such is over the top charge.

Again, it is American. It is classic style, too.

After reading the previous reviews I didn’t feel desperate to contemplate this terrific movie. Retract this movie! I am 32 years broken-down and I don’t have kids. But, I laughed-out-loud all through this movie. Jimmy’s best friend (the guinea pig for all of Jimmy’s risky experiments) deserves an Oscar for best supporting actor in a comedy! Now that’s a friend! If you can’t sing already – Jimmy is really knowing and creates frigid gadgets. Oh and Jimmy has built his very gain gadget workshop (accessed via a secret elevator entrance in the befriend yard) under his house. At no time did this movie seem dreary. You (or maybe your kids) will barely have time to recover from one laugh to the next or between spirited action scenes. There is a very icy and super-loyal robot dog too! This movie can attend ANYONE forget their problems and hurry into Jimmy’s world!(that is saying a lot!) I am crossing my fingers for many sequels. If the creative geniuses who made this movie are perhaps reading – Job Well Done!

“Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” (2001)

It is rare that an enchanting children’s film comes along and reminds us exactly how distinguished fun it was to be a kid. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is one of those movies that makes you want to go succor to those days and play with your gadgets and have fun. Instead of doing that you could impartial see this fine film. It’s about as trustworthy for kids as it is for adults, and I’m clear even though the movie is unrealistic, everyone will opinion Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius as it was meant to be viewed – a fun-filled, imaginative and faithful adaptation to the TV explain I have not yet seen.

The movie’s state is fairly simple – some kids’ parents are kidnapped by aliens so its up to the children to keep the day – but the wizardry is not in the region. The right fantastical thing about the movie is the fact that Jimmy Neutron is a boy-genius and this offers for some terrific belly laughs. The fact that this young child can develop things that children and even some adults can only dream about is shimmering and it brings the movie vividly to life. Jimmy can manufacture edible bubble-gum which blows up to be a type of transport, burp soda, a mechanical dog named Goddard, a plant which is robotically engineered to eat girls, and many other things. Neutron’s inventions are what establish the day in the raze and they are memorably creative and you’ll wish you had some of the things that Jimmy could originate.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jimmy Neutron – Boy Genius! Click Here

The film’s humour is absolutely handsome. You’ve got the chance to eye a giant octopus and rollercoaster accelerate in area, discover Channel 7 news race by children and the characters themselves bring many smiles and laughs to the movie. Jimmy Neutron is a laughable man himself, very scientific and uses a lot of gigantic words and metaphorical slangs (laughable since he is so young), but it isn’t him that steals the expose. For me, the sidekicks really retract the demonstrate which is so often the case in many comedies. Carl is Jimmy’s best friend, a glasses-wearing, beefy and thick guy, and he has the coolest lisp and I objective belief his lines and character in general were very cute. For the kids Sheen will be terrific. His obsession with a cartoon character Ultra Lord offers many belly laughs. And then of course there’s Goddard, Neutron’s mechanical dog, who has many gadgets and insertions, and he ultimately takes the cake and is the most inventive (and that’s out of a lot) thing in the film.

Sure, the movie does have a couple of problems. There are unruffled some questions you’ll want answered like I wondered if the parents were only abducted from Jimmy’s home town or from all over the world. And how could the children honest “breathe” in set? But of course you’ve got to remember this movie is mostly intended to be seen by children so those 2 are excusable in some senses. What disappointed me slightly is that the movie is really quite predictable overall. The gadgets and ideas in the movie are indescriably spellbinding and you don’t inquire of them, but the situation doesn’t have any major twists and turns and you impartial know how the movie is going to ruin. I also wanted to discover more of Jimmy’s class teacher, who is the funniest character in the entire film and has yet 2 scenes.

However, what remains of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is a terrific racy movie with expansive memorable quotes and some unbelievable ideas. It is worth seeing in the theatres for its creative genius and large photography. Highly recommended!

Abominable Dr. Phibes: Label gives a campy performance in one of the few terror films which successfully and intentionally joins comedy and fright. Joseph Cotten and Terry-Thomas are honest two of the victims on whom Ticket seeks vengeance for his disfigurement and his wife’s death. The Art Deco sets give the film a stylish inspect and the British deadpan delivery of many of the jokes helps immensely.

Tales of Scare – Three stories adapted very loosely from the work of Edgar Allen Poe – “Morella”, “The Dark Cat” and “The (Facts in the) Case of M. Valdemar”, each roughly one half-hour in length.

Twice Told Tales – This is a compilation of three short films based on Nathaniel Hawthorne works – Heidegger’s Experiment, Rappaccini’s Daughter and The House of Seven Gables. In both this film and “Tales of Fright”, the thought is not so powerful to be honest to the current legend, as it is to exhaust the foundation of the anecdote to the advantage of Cormen’s ability to effect scary movies and in Price’s ability to star in them.

Theater of Blood: An bright alarm film about a demented Shakespearean actor (Notice) who takes a bloody revenge against the eight theatre critics who gave his performances awful reviews. To me this one of Price’s often forgotten and most underrated films. He really hams it up and it works perfectly.

Madhouse: Notice stars as an actor who returns to the cover to reprise his role as a killer a few years after his wife-to-be was decapitated by a killer nobody caught. Impress is friendly as always, but it unprejudiced seems a slight tired and more like a tribute to his past and better films.

Witchfinder General (aka Conqueror Worm) : In 17th-century England during the struggle between Cromwell and the Crown, Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Stamp) and his associates leer out and persecute those view to practice sorcery as well as anyone else who incurs their wrath. When Hopkins executes the priest of a diminutive town for being a warlock, he and his partner gain themselves the target of a young soldier who leaves his post in Cromwell’s army to hunt down and extinguish the pair. The movie captures this period in English history very well for a low-budget production. Imprint is at his menacing, sadistic best without the intentional camp that he injects in so many of his other dread films.

An extras disc will bear a documentary (“Vincent Price: Renaissance Man”) and two featurettes (“The Art of Dismay” and “Working with Vincent Ticket”) . The space will be available on September 11th.

For those Designate fans who already fill his prior DVD film releases, stamp that only Witchfinder General is a original transfer to DVD. The other film transfers are from previously released editions. And as such, Twice Told Tales, Theater of Blood, and Madhouse are in letterbox format, not anamorphic. So if you already have these films, Dr. Phibes and Tales of Awe on DVD you only need to engage Witchfinder General separately, you’ll glean nothing else original here. Fox cleverly fails to tell the format of its DVDs by calling everything “widescreen” whether or not the films were processed in letterbox or anamorphic formats. Its a tall disagreement for those of us with HDTVs. What an opportunity lost for remastering these fright classics.

This is a resplendent and fresh film, made even more so by its joyous celebration of folk music. Beautifully nuanced, well paced, and highly exciting, this haunting film is an absolute gem. It is no wonder that it won the 2000 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. The performances in this film are simply stellar and noble of recognition.

The year is 1907, and the highly independent and incandescent Dr. Lily Penleric (Janet McTeer), a illustrious musicologist, has once again been passed over for promotion by the college at which she teaches. Wrathful, she decides to pull up stakes and go to visit her sister, Elna (Jane Adams), who is one of two women teaching at a settlement school in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.

When Janet arrives, she hears one of her sister’s helpers, Deladis (Emma Rossum), singing an archaic folk song that she recognizes. It is being sung in a blueprint that she has never before heard it sung. Upon discovering that the song was handed down generationally in this insular community, she realizes that she may actually be hearing the song as it may originally have been intended to be sung. Inflamed by her discovery, she sets about capturing as many songs as she can from these fiercely proud, mountain people. In execute, she is memorializing a rich, oral, musical history.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Songcatcher! Click Here

Her project takes Janet on a voyage of self-discovery, both personal and professional. Along the procedure, she becomes immersed in the the lives and traditions of these mountain people, realizing what an integral fraction music plays in their lives. While bad in terms of creature comforts and leading a harsh, hardscrabble sort of life, these mountain folks have a culturally rich, oral tradition and are a veritable esteem trove of musty songs.

While catching the music and lyrics of these outmoded songs for posterity and wider appreciation, notating her discovery of these songs for a book that she hopes to write, Dr. Penleric makes the acquaintance of a number of mountain men and women, including a tough passe bird, Viney Butler (Pat Carroll) . This leads to meeting with Viney’s suspicious but shining, talented, and reliable looking grandson, Tom Bledsoe (Aidan Quinn), with whom she ultimately developes a passionate relationship that correlates nicely to her passion for music.

A number of other subplots are woven throughout this film. One involves her sister, Elna, who becomes eager with a esteem that dare not protest its name. There is also a admire triangle between two of the mountain woman and the husband of one of them. Young admire and coming of age are also themes that are touched upon. Meanwhile, a mining company seeks to consume out the land from under these people for a mere pittance. All of these subplots support to illustrate the often harsh reality of life in the mountains. The only predicament that I found was with the subplot enchanting Elna and her lover, Harriet, in terms of the complacency that surrounds what ultimately happens to Harriet. It was a most disturbing resolution that did not ring altogether good. Unexcited, the overall strength of the film is such that it overcomes this incongruity.

Janet McTeer gives a no nonsense performance, and the draw that the music seems to transfix and transform her is a joy to peruse. Jane Adams, as Elna, gives an exquisitely pleasing and sensitive performance, as does E. Katherine Kerr in the role of Harriet, the settlement school teacher with whom Elna is keen. Aidan Quinn gives an vivid and thoughtful performance as a mountain man who has been to the outside world and found it wanting. Pat Carroll is sensational as Viney Butler, the mountain woman who takes the vicissitudes of life in plug and wears many hats: mother, grandmother, midwife, musician, singer, and oral historian. Emma Rossum, however, is positively splendid as the young, recent faced, mountain lass with a smile and protest that will fling your heart apart. She is a unbelievable, young performer with operatic training and the ability to pronounce like Dolly Parton. What a glean!

Cameo appearances by Taj Mahal, Iris Dement, and others wait on to further enrich this film. The music and songs are played and sung live, which makes them resonate with authenticity and adds a vibrancy that might otherwise be lost. The folk dancing is a joy to gaze, as the mountain people bag around for a jamboree. The film, shot on station, captures all the physical beauty of the terrain, as well as the rusticity and harshness of life in the mountains. This is simply a broad film that is well worth having in one’s personal collection.

The DVD is first rate, providing a certain, quality portray and spacious sound. It offers a astounding commentary with the director, Maggie Greenwald, that explains the underpinnings of the film. There is also an enchanting feature on the making of the film. All in all, it is a must have DVD for music lovers, as well as for those who simply like a well made and beautifully acted film. Bravo!

I rented this movie from Netflix because I was in the mood for something different…when it came in the mail, I read the synopsis and wondered what I’d been on. When my husband and I watched it, though, we were both enchanted. The movie itself is extremely well done, with obliging characters and a superb epic. The music…well, I’d never encountered this kind of music before, and when I first heard it, I wasn’t impressed. But it grew on me expeditiously, and it’s worthy stuff! SONGCATCHER is an awesome film more people need to seek.

Note to the reviewer who was shy about a misinterpretation of “O Death:” as a first time watcher (and listener: I’ve never heard the song before), my impression of the song matched yours. I didn’t view the movie slanting its meaning.
